Acariasis; Gamasoidosis; List of mites associated with cutaneous reactions Two potential ways that northern fowl mites, Ornithonyssus sylviarum (Canestrini and Fanzago), initiate infestations in poultry flocks were investigated: between-farm collection of eggs and transfer of egg flats, and the transfer of mites via eggs from breeder flocks to pullet growing operations. The two Ornithonyssus species reported to infect hamsters are Ornithonyssus bacoti, the tropical rat mite or red mite, and Ornithonyssus sylviarum, the northern fowl mite. Although O. bacoti has a wide host range, the primary hosts are the brown Norway rat ( Rattus norvegicus ) and the black roof rat ( Rattus rattus ) ( Fox, 1982 ). They are frequently confused with red bird mites (Dermanyssus gallinae) or the Nordic bird mites (Ornithonyssus sylviarum), which also belong to the Macronyssidae and possess similar mor- 1988-07-01 Ornithonyssus sylviarum mites and excrement on the vent area of a broiler breeder hen.

The northern fowl mite (Ornithonyssus sylviarum, NFM) (Canestrini and Fanzago, 1877) is a blood-feeding ectoparasite of birds that is a common pest of the poultry industry in North America . Infestations by NFM on laying hens reach high densities (>70,000 mites/bird), which result in host blood loss, tissue inflammation and costly reductions in productivity [ 1 , 2 ]. The northern fowl mite (NFM),Ornithonyssus sylviarum, is the most common ectoparasite of laying hens in North America. Infestation can cause a reduction in egg production, egg weights, and feed conversion efficiency. However, there is a lack of information on the effects of NFM on hen physiology, physical condition, and egg quality.

Synonyms Leiognathus bursa Berlese (1888) Liponyssus bursa Hirst (1916) Ornithonyssus bursa Sambon (1928) Distribution Early work by Matthysse et al. [8] showed that reduced levels of lysine in the diet of chickens decreased the intensity of the inflammatory response, and lowered resistance of birds to northern fowl mites (Ornithonyssus sylviarum). This work indicated that limited nutritional resources can impair immune function and ectoparasite resistance.

Images of Ornithonyssus sylviarum. From September 1978 through Februrary 1979, dispersal of uncontrolled, naturally occurring populations of the northern fowl mite, Ornithonyssus sylviarum (Canestrini and Fanzago), and the chicken body louse, Menacanthus stramineus (Nitzch) was studied on 30 strains of egg-type pullets reared to 20 weeks old on four growing rations before being housed for egg production. The northern fowl mite, Ornithonyssus sylviarum (Canestrini & Fanzago, 1877), is found on several continents and has been a major pest of poultry in the United States for nearly a century. Lack of earlier USA reports in the United States suggests an introduction or change to pest status in domestic poultry systems occurred in the early 1900s. Ornithonyssus sylvarium is the northern fowl mite and has a wide host range, so physical examination of these birds should be performed. Since the host range is extensive, free-living passerine may disseminate this parasite in aviary collections.
